Mix together shortening, sugar, eggs. Add and mix well: cocoa, red food coloring. Add and mix well: buttermilk, salt, flour.
(optional: add 3 oz package of vanilla instant pudding for a moist cake) Fold in: white vinegar, baking soda. (important: fold in slowly) Pour entire mixture into two 9-inch round pans (grease and flour first) Bake 350 for 30-35 minutes
Mix well together: sugar, shortening, butter vanilla extract. Add warm milk, and beat well. Let cake cool after removing from oven, then apply icing and enjoy!
