As always the trade show was jam packed with turf industry favorites.
It seemed like a lot of the venders were trying to attract the Kid of Turf to their booths, everywhere you looked there was candy. There was even a booth that featured a really cool Lego scene and had fun Lego building stations. What Kid of Turf wouldn’t love that?
Something that was noticeably lacking from years past were the Hydration Stations. We were only able to locate one and the bottles were gone halfway through the second day.
What there were plenty of were the little GCSAA lip balms, great for the dry air in the convention center.
There were lots of great announcements made right on the trade show floor this year as well as some fun events. One of the major announcements was John Deere making a one million dollar donation to The First Tee. Way to go John Deere Golf!!!
Aquatrols had their happy hour and also in the Aquatrols booth was the GCI Tweet-up, a must see event for the social media junkies. Pat Jones was on hand to give out awards to the social media leaders in the industry.
This year we tried something new. We know that not everyone will be able to make it out to the Sip & Social and we want as many Wives of Turf to connect in real life as possible. It was with that thought in mind that we created the Coffee Breaks.
The Networking Pavilion was located right next to the Starbucks and gave us some comfy seating to relax and take a break from the trade show floor. Wives were able to grab a cup of coffee and chat with other Wives. Being right at the convention center was perfect for a quick getaway in the middle of the day.
We will definitely be doing more of those in years to come.
Overall attendance to GIS was down and we knew that would have an effect on how many Wives would make it out for the Sip & Social. We decided to scale it back a little this year and make the event a little smaller.

This year the Sip & Social was held at the Hard Rock Cafe in the Surf Shack. The private room gave us the perfect, intimate setting to catch up with old friends and welcome new friends to our community. Drinks and appetizers were provided for the two hour event which was free to all who attended.
Of course our friends from the Wee One Foundation came out to celebrate with us as well.
Plans are already in the works for a VERY special Sip & Social for 2014 and we hope YOU will be there.
Words cannot express how grateful we are to Pat Jones and the rest of the Golf Course Industry Magazine crew. Pat has been our biggest supporter since we were nothing more than a Facebook page with less than 20 fans. He saw something is us before we saw the potential our community has in the turf industry.
GCI was our biggest sponsor for the 1st Annual Sip & Social and they were our ONLY sponsor this year. The support that Pat and GCI have shown us since day one is second to none and we would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you!
Pat, it’s people like you who make the Turf Industry something special!
All in all it was a fast a furious week. The San Diego weather could have been nicer but the week was a much needed change of pace for many.
Were you in Sand Diego for GIS? What was your favorite part?
